Finding The Best Day To Conceive
If you and your spouse are ready to start or expand your family, knowing when the best day to get pregnant is can increase your changes of conceiving.
Knowing when a woman is going to ovulate is an essential step if she wants to conceive a child. When she ovulates, a woman is the most fertile. At this point, the ovary releases the egg. The egg than sits in the uterus. This egg has a lifespan of approximately 12 hours where it can be fertilized by sperm.
Most women have a 28 day cycle so ovulation will occur 14 days before the start of their next menstrual cycle. If a woman has a regular cycle, counting the days to determine the most fertile period will work very well. For women with regular cycles, determining the best day to conceive is as easy as figuring out the day your next period is due to start, and then counting backwards on the calendar 14 days. If your cycle tends to be a little longer or a little shorter you can count back anywhere from 12 to 16 days from the first day of your next period to find your fertile day.
Another popular method is to use the basal temperature method. When a woman ovulates, her body temperature increases anywhere from 1/2 of a degree to 1.6 of a degree. To measure such a small increase in body temperature, a special basal thermometer is needed. A regular thermometer that most people have in their medicine cabinet is not able to measure such a small increase. After keeping track of her basal temperature for a 2 or 3 month period, a woman will have a good idea of the day she can conceive a baby each month.
A handful of women can feel when they ovulate and know immediately when it is the right day to get pregnant. These women feel a slight discomfort or mild pain in their lower abdomen when they are ovulating.
One thing all women need to be aware of is that sperm can stay alive inside the uterus for as long as 5 days. This can potentially add more than 1 day that a woman can conceive. Some couples that are trying to conceive have been known to have sexual intercourse 1 or 2 days prior to when the woman should ovulate. This is done with the hopes that, if the day of ovulation was not correctly determined, there will still be that 5 day window of opportunity.
Sometimes the idea of waiting for the day of ovulation may not be the ideal choice. Doing so can cause sex to become more of a chore and in turn put unnecessary stress on a marriage. Many couples trying to conceive find that if they just stick with their normal routine, including intercourse, they will conceive. By keeping your relationship as normal as possible, you are more likely to have intercourse during the window of opportunity.
By following these tips, you will be able to determine the best day to get pregnant based on your own body and your cycles. If you need further help in predicting your ovulation schedule, there are ovulation kits that can purchased in most drug or department stores. Most couples that are trying to conceive are usually able to do so within a year.
